A collection of reference books serving research at the HLMD has been documented since the museum opening in 1906. The library holdings mirror the wide thematic range of the collections. In thematic order, books concerning Artand Cultural History (mostly exhibition catalogues and artist monographs) as scientific literature about the geosciences, palaeontology and zoology are available in reference library

New publications are acquired to a large extent through exchanges with museums all around the world. About 300 periodicals and annual reports of other museums and research institutes are therefore continuously available. The library encompasses a total of circa 75,000 volumes, circa 65,000 volumes of which deal with Art and Cultural History.

The library is headed by the librarian Rita Schuck, actively supported by the stack-room administrator Detlef Meier.

An electronically accessible catalogue was established within the HeBIS (Hessian Library and Information System) during the renovation period of the HLMD.
