Ivory

The Hüpsch Collection with its medieval liturgical objects made of ivory and precious metal already came to Darmstadt in 1805. Its principle items include an ivory Byzantine pyx and box, early medieval diptychs, a small panel from the so-called Magdeburg Antependium, two tower reliquaries, the portable altar of Wolbero as well as the domed reliquary by the Master of the Gregorius Altar. Numerous illuminated manuscripts from the 9th to 13th centuries round out this collection of medieval craftsmanship which is one of the most important in Germany.
